Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Archaeology at University of Algarve, Portugal

About Position/Job

University of Algarvee is opening an international tender to recruit one postdoctoral researcher (initial level) in the field of Palaeolithic Archaeology or related areas. This role is part of the ERC-funded research project “WRAP – Western Rift Archaeology and Palaeoenvironments Project”, hosted at ICArEHB.

This exciting research will focus on the Pleistocene archaeological record of the Albertine Rift Valley (Uganda) and includes international collaboration, fieldwork, and multidisciplinary research.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

PhD in Archaeology or related fields
Experience in archaeological fieldwork, especially in Africa
Knowledge of machine learning methods
Strong English proficiency (oral & written)
Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals

Preferred Qualifications:

Skills in Python and/or R
GIS and excavation report writing
Drone operation for archaeological survey
Collaborative research and team leadership

Key Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate international fieldwork campaigns
Manage drone-based site surveys (LiDAR, spectral, photographic)
Conduct independent research in the Albertine Rift Valley (Uganda)
Publish in top international journals
Mentor students and contribute to teaching (up to 90 hrs/year)
Liaise with collaborators across institutions and countries
