About the Program
The University of Basel’s Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPAS) group, together with the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Zurich, is offering an exciting fully-funded PhD position in archaeozoology and isotope analysis. Starting in October 2025, this project focuses on the detailed study of Neolithic lakeshore settlements in Switzerland. By combining archaeozoological methods and isotope analysis, the research aims to uncover economic practices, supply systems, and human-environment interactions during this period. The candidate will work within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team, contributing to the SNSF Weave/Lead Agency Project titled Deciphering Lakeside Settlements. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in archaeozoology or archaeology
- Strong academic record
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience in archaeozoology (especially morphological identification of animal bones)
- Knowledge of isotope analysis and archaeometry
- Interest in wetland archaeology and Neolithic studies
- Knowledge of German is an advantage
