About the Fellowship

The IEG Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), Mainz offer an outstanding opportunity for early-career researchers to pursue independent projects in European history, history of religion, and related historical disciplines, including Digital Humanities. Aimed at international postdocs, the fellowship supports research covering the early modern period to contemporary history, with a strong emphasis on comparative or cross-border studies and Europe’s connections with the wider world. Fellows will be fully integrated into the IEG’s vibrant research community, engaging in weekly colloquia and collaborative projects. This residential programme provides the time, resources, and scholarly environment to produce research of both academic and global significance.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD awarded within the past three years before fellowship start date
  • Proficiency in English
  • Commitment to full-time residence at the IEG, Mainz

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong publication record or evidence of research excellence
  • International academic experience or interdisciplinary research background

Not Eligible:

  • Candidates who earned their PhD more than three years before the start date
