About the Position

The University of Barcelona invites applications for a Postdoctoral position in Social Anthropology and Pyrenean Ethnography on Wildfires. This role focuses on exploring traditional knowledge systems, community-based wildfire management, and ecological relationships in the Catalan Pyrenees (Alt Pirineu i Aran). The project aims to document and integrate local fire prevention practices to develop holistic wildfire management strategies. The researcher will work within an interdisciplinary team contributing to comparative research across Europe, with a start date in January 2026. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage in ethnographic fieldwork, collaborate with local communities, and contribute to international academic dialogue on climate resilience and cultural landscapes.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Social Sciences or Humanities
  • Master’s degree in Social Anthropology
  • Strong background in ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative research methods

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in the Catalan Pyrenees or similar rural landscapes
  • Fluency in English, Catalan, and Spanish (excellent level required)
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct community-based and interdisciplinary research
  • Interest in wildfire management, multispecies ethnography, and climate studies

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct ethnographic fieldwork on wildfire knowledge and prevention in the Catalan Pyrenees
  • Collect and analyse qualitative data using a multispecies deep mapping approach
  • Collaborate with local communities and contribute to participatory wildfire management strategies
  • Assist in organising project meetings, workshops, and hybrid policy events
  • Participate in publications, conferences, and outreach activities
  • Support project coordination and communication within the Spanish research team
