About Position/Job
The University of Cambridge invites applications for the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa, a senior leadership role based in the Department of Archaeology. This internationally significant professorship focuses on African archaeology and deep history, understood as a broad interdisciplinary research field integrating archaeology, heritage studies, environmental history, and related disciplines. The role emphasises a continent-wide vision of Africa, with strong engagement in sub-Saharan Africa, deep chronological perspectives, and Africa’s place in global history.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic leadership, develop innovative research and fieldwork projects, and strengthen collaboration between Cambridge and African institutions. The position aligns closely with the mission of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and includes a Mandela Magdalene Memorial Fellowship at Magdalene College, offering a unique platform for research, teaching, outreach, and capacity building in African archaeology.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

- Expertise in at least two African regions, including sub-Saharan Africa

- Proven academic leadership and team-building experience
- Strong international and African research collaborations
- Commitment to capacity building, outreach, and heritage engagement
