About Position/Job

The National Gallery is offering a prestigious 22-month Aldama Scientific Fellow position within its Scientific Department, funded by the Aldama Foundation. This full-time fellowship is designed for an early-career researcher with a strong interest in conservation science and technical art history. The fellow will contribute to the scientific examination of paintings from the National Gallery and other publicly accessible collections, supporting conservation and research projects of international importance. The role focuses on macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) scanning, alongside other non-invasive imaging techniques and paint sample analysis. Working closely with scientists, conservators, and curators, the fellow will investigate material composition, condition, and deterioration phenomena, while also conducting historical technical research. This fellowship aligns with the Gallery’s mission to advance knowledge of painting techniques and materials through interdisciplinary, science-led research.
