About The Grant

The University of Algarve invites applications for a funded Research Grant 014/2026 (BI-M) in Archaeology and Anthropology at the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behaviour (ICArEHB), located in Faro, Portugal. This exciting research opportunity focuses on Oldowan stone tools and their adaptive role in Plio-Pleistocene hominin evolution, contributing to cutting-edge international research in archaeological science and human origins.

The successful candidate will work within the ERC-funded OLAF project, undertaking independent and collaborative research using experimental archaeology, lithic analysis, and functional studies. Moreover, the role involves designing experimental protocols, analysing wear traces, and interpreting archaeological materials. Field and museum work in Ethiopia further strengthens the hands-on research experience and global exposure.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline, along with strong English proficiency. In addition, experience in archaeological fieldwork, particularly in East Africa, is highly valued. Preferred skills include GIS, R, raster analysis, and microscopic or macroscopic study of stone tools, alongside strong analytical thinking and teamwork abilities.

This is a full-time research fellowship for 12 months, starting in October 2026, offering competitive Funding status with a monthly stipend of €1,359.64. Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field
