About Position/Job
The University of Reading invites applications for a Research and Interpretation Officer to support the major heritage research project Cookham Abbey Connects. This three-year, part-time post is based within the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science (SAGES) and focuses on the investigation and interpretation of a nationally significant Anglo-Saxon monastic settlement in Cookham, Berkshire. Working under the supervision of Professor Gabor Thomas, the role centres on early medieval archaeology, post-excavation analysis, and public engagement. The project combines field archaeology, digital archive management, artefact analysis, and heritage interpretation to enhance academic knowledge and community understanding of early monastic life in England. This position aligns with the department’s strong research profile in medieval archaeology and landscape studies and offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact publications and outreach supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Degree in Archaeology or a closely related discipline
- Strong post-excavation analysis skills, including stratigraphic interpretation
- Experience managing digital archaeological archives
- Ability to produce academic publications and research outputs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Digital illustration skills (e.g., Adobe Illustrator)
- Experience in heritage interpretation and outreach
- Proven contribution to archaeological field projects
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Cookham Abbey site archive and digital database
- Lead analysis, quantification and interpretation of archaeological findings
- Produce content for academic publications, grant applications, and media
- Contribute to public engagement and heritage dissemination
- Work closely with the project team and departmental researchers
