About Position/Job
The University of Chicago’s Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations (SALC) invites applications for a one-year role as Assistant Instructional Professor in Hindi. Starting January 2026, this full-time teaching position reflects the department’s commitment to strengthening Hindi language learning and South Asian studies within the Humanities Division. The role involves teaching six Hindi language courses at introductory and intermediate levels, alongside an additional course that may extend into the Core Curriculum or a content-based class designed by the instructor. This position provides an excellent opportunity for scholars with expertise in Hindi pedagogy, second language acquisition, or related fields to contribute to the University’s distinguished tradition in South Asian languages and cultures. The appointment is non-renewable and will conclude on 31 December 2026.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- MA in Hindi, South Asian Studies, or related discipline
- Demonstrated ability to teach Hindi at university level
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant field
- Training in second language pedagogy, acquisition, or assessment
- Experience in course design and curriculum development
Key Responsibilities
- Teach six Hindi language courses (Winter, Spring, Autumn 2026)
- Design and teach one additional course (Core Curriculum or content-based)
- Grade Hindi language competency examinations
- Assist with student placement for Fall 2026 courses
- Support training of teaching assistants when required
