About the Position

The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University (AU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning 1 August 2026. The department seeks a scholar with expertise in health, migration, and social inequality in global contexts, with research that may include areas such as population movements, transnational health governance, environmental displacement, critical security studies, digital ethnography, GIS mapping, community-engaged research, and global health policy. The successful candidate will strengthen the department’s curriculum and foster interdisciplinary collaborations across AU, particularly with programmes in International Service, Health Studies, Environmental Science, and Data Science. This position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic research community in one of the most influential academic environments in the United States.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Anthropology or closely related field (completed or expected by August 2026)

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence at undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community engagement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in securing external research funding
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations across AU

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a nationally recognised research programme in Anthropology
  • Teach and mentor students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Publish in high-impact academic journals and seek external research support
  • Contribute actively to departmental, college, and university service
  • Collaborate across departments on interdisciplinary projects
