Mississippi State University (MSU) invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Southeastern Archaeology within the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures (AMEC), located at the Main Campus in Starkville, Mississippi, USA. This full-time, 9-month faculty appointment is anticipated to begin on 16 August 2026.
The successful candidate will be based in the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, an endowed research institute offering extensive laboratory facilities, a research library, museum, and curation spaces. The role combines research excellence, undergraduate and graduate teaching, field-based training, and active participation in the department’s B.A. in Anthropology and growing M.A. programme in Applied Anthropology. With a strong emphasis on field schools, applied research, and external funding, this position offers a significant opportunity to shape archaeological scholarship and professional training in the southeastern United States.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in archaeology or a closely related field by the time of appointment
- Ability to teach archaeological site survey field schools
- Experience incorporating graduate students into research projects
- Commitment to developing the M.A. programme in Applied Anthropology
- Capacity to pursue external research funding
Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of successful teaching and research
- Demonstrated applied archaeological experience
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct original research and publish scholarly work in archaeology
- Teach undergraduate survey courses and advanced topical courses
- Teach site survey and excavation field schools
- Teach graduate seminars and supervise M.A. theses
- Serve on graduate, departmental, college, and university committees
- Develop regional research projects involving student participation
- Seek external funding through grants and contracts
- Support professional service at local, national, and disciplinary levels
