About Position/Job

The University of Warsaw announces a competitive academic vacancy for an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Archaeology, based in the Chair of Oriental Archaeology. This full-time, temporary position combines research and teaching responsibilities and is aimed at recognised researchers (R2 level) holding a PhD in archaeology. The role focuses on Near Eastern archaeology, with strong emphasis on fieldwork, landscape archaeology, GIS applications, and emerging digital methods, including basic machine learning.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in archaeology
  • Proven research record with peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience in independent archaeological fieldwork in the Near East
  • Proficiency in GIS
  • Experience in university-level teaching
  • Knowledge of the Polish language is sufficient for teaching duties
  • Fulfilment of requirements under Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Poland)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in landscape archaeology research
  • Basic competence in machine learning applications in archaeology
  • International research experience
  • Demonstrated success in grant applications

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting original archaeological research and publishing results
  • Delivering 210 teaching hours per year, including field courses
  • Participating in faculty organisational and academic activities
  • Preparing and submitting research grant applications
  • Supporting students and doctoral candidates in research and academic development
  • Contributing to science outreach and public engagement activities
