About Position/Job

The Department of History of Art at the University of Cambridge invites applications for a permanent Assistant Professor in Islamic Art (ca. 1500–ca. 1700), with a focus on the Safavid and/or Mughal Empires. This role supports Cambridge’s commitment to the global history of art and architecture and will contribute significantly to the Department’s academic goals, particularly in the new MPhil in the Global History of Art and Architecture, launching in 2026-27.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in History of Art, South Asian or Middle Eastern Studies, or a related field
  • High-level research achievement
  • Ability to undertake collaborative research and secure external funding

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching and examination experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • FHEA accreditation
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Familiarity with Fitzwilliam Museum and/or Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and examination
  • Supervise MPhil and PhD dissertations
  • Support development of the MPhil in the Global History of Art and Architecture
  • Conduct and publish high-level research
  • Collaborate across departments and museums
