About Position/Job

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in Archaeological Materials Science at its Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC) in Athalassa, Cyprus. This position is part of the ERA Chair project “One Archaeological Science” and offers a unique opportunity to advance research in archaeological materials science using isotope analyses, petrography, mineralogy, and chemical analysis methods. The successful candidate will develop both laboratory and field research, contribute to postgraduate teaching, and foster international collaborations. This role emphasises interdisciplinary research, combining material science, environmental archaeology, and human bioarchaeology, and is central to the development of CyI’s cutting-edge facilities in archaeometry and analytical archaeology. Applicants will work under the supervision of Prof Thilo Rehren, with the chance to lead innovative projects and contribute to the Institute’s international research agenda.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in archaeological science, earth science, or a relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant research experience
  • Professional research experience in archaeological materials science, including isotope analysis
  • Track record of independent or team-led research with high-level international outputs
  • Experience in external research funding applications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Publications in archaeology/archaeological science, especially in the BEMME region
  • Experience collaborating with government, NGOs, SMEs, or professional bodies
  • Commitment to public outreach and academic engagement

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage laboratory facilities at CyI (SEM-EDS, optical petrography, etc.)
  • Conduct fieldwork and laboratory research in archaeological materials science
  • Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers
  • Teach and contribute to postgraduate and joint programmes
  • Attract external grants and foster international collaborations
  • Promote interdisciplinary research and isotope-based archaeological studies
