Masaryk University offers a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher position in Biological Anthropology. This position is based at the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Science, Czech Republic. The appointment starts on 1 July 2026 (negotiable depending on circumstances). Applicants must submit applications by 31 May 2026. The position involves a 1.5-year temporary research contract.
The Czech Science Foundation–funded BITE Brno project hosts the role. The project investigates long-term urban development in Brno from the 9th to the 19th century. It examines how urbanization influenced population structure, health, and mobility patterns over time. It uses bioarchaeological data from approximately 1,000 individuals recovered from multiple burial grounds. Researchers treat these individuals as a unified dataset for large-scale demographic analysis.
The successful candidate leads paleodemographic reconstruction across extensive skeletal collections. Core responsibilities include estimating age-at-death and biological sex using established osteological methods. The role also includes applying and developing complementary approaches such as cementochronology and proteomic sex identification. The researcher integrates demographic data with isotopic and paleopathological evidence and contributes to statistical modelling and interpretation of population structure.
Applicants must hold a PhD in anthropology or a closely related field. Candidates must demonstrate experience with large skeletal datasets and quantitative analysis. The role requires strong data management skills, independent working ability, and clear academic communication in English. The position provides access to advanced laboratory facilities, flexible working arrangements, relocation support, and a collaborative international research environment.
