Fully Funded PhD in Medieval Islamic Monetary History at CNRS, France (2026 Opportunity in Archaeometry & Numismatics) | The CNRS – National Center for Scientific Research invites applications for a fully funded doctoral Researcher position in the Economic and Monetary History of al-Andalus. This position is based at the Institut de Recherche sur les Archéomatériaux in Orléans, France. This doctoral project focuses on 11th-century taifa kingdoms and medieval Islamic coinage. It also examines gold and silver circulation across the Islamic West. Importantly, it contributes to the international ANR ALMACIR research programme in archaeometry and medieval economic systems.

The successful candidate will join a highly specialised research environment using LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), numismatic cataloguing, and archaeometric analysis. Furthermore, the role involves working with museum collections, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and participating in international scientific events. As a result, this PhD ensures strong interdisciplinary exposure across history, archaeology, and materials science.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Medieval Studies, History, Archaeology, or equivalent. Additionally, a strong knowledge of the medieval Islamic West and coinage systems is required. Preferred skills include familiarity with archaeometry, Arabic language ability, and field experience. Moreover, excellent French and English communication skills are essential for collaborative research and academic dissemination.
