About the Position
The Mariners’ Museum and Park invites applications for a funded Conservation Science Fellow position in Conservation Science at Newport News, USA. This research opportunity focuses on electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and column chromatography for sulphur compound analysis in waterlogged shipwreck wood. It supports international research initiatives in archaeological conservation and materials chemistry.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a conservation science research programme and an advanced Batten Conservation Complex laboratory environment. Moreover, the role uses SEM, EDS, and chromatographic separation techniques to investigate sulphur-induced degradation in marine organic artefacts. Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities ensures high-quality experimental outcomes and publication-ready research outputs.
Applicants must hold a PhD or Master’s degree in materials science, chemistry, or analytical chemistry and demonstrate at least two years of laboratory experience. In addition, strong expertise in SEM, chromatography, and experimental design is required. Preferred skills include scientific writing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strong communication abilities for research reporting and teamwork.
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track research fellowship for 2 years starting June 2026, offering competitive funding status of $55,000 per year.
