About Position/Job

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) invites applications for the position of Director of the Centre for Archaeological Research (CAR), a full-time leadership role within the Department of Anthropology. Established in 1974, CAR is a nationally respected, university-based contract archaeology and curation facility, supporting research, cultural resource management (CRM), and public heritage engagement across Texas and beyond. The Director will provide strategic leadership for a centre that curates over 15 million archaeological items and secures more than $1 million annually in research and contract funding. Appointed under the Professor of Practice title series, the role offers opportunities for teaching, graduate supervision, and applied research. This position aligns with UT San Antonio’s mission as a Carnegie R1 and Hispanic Serving Institution, emphasising community engagement, environmental anthropology, and professional training for undergraduate and doctoral students.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology or a related field
  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in cultural resource management or heritage administration
  • Experience across all CRM phases, including bidding, contracts, project design, personnel, and budgets
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and organisational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Anthropology or a related discipline
  • Proven leadership and executive management experience
  • Record of applied research and scholarly activity
  • Experience conducting archaeological research in Texas or nearby regions

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Center for Archaeological Research
  • Oversee contract archaeology projects, curation facilities, and budget management
  • Collaborate with the Department of Anthropology on student training and research
  • Contribute to teaching, instruction, and graduate committees as desired
  • Strengthen community partnerships and public education initiatives
  • Support UT San Antonio’s mission as a Hispanic Serving Institution
