About the Position
The University of Reading is inviting applications for a full-time, permanent position as Director of QUEST and Lecturer in Archaeology (Teaching-Research) within the School of Archaeology, Geography & Environmental Science (SAGES). Based in Whiteknights, Reading, this dual role combines academic teaching, research, and leadership responsibilities with the directorship of QUEST – the University’s consultancy delivering high-quality archaeological and environmental projects. The postholder will manage staff, oversee projects from inception to publication, and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Reporting to the Head of School and supported by a mentor, the appointee will join an inclusive and internationally recognised department with a strong reputation for innovation and student-centred learning. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Archaeology, Geography, Environmental Science or equivalent professional experience
- Expertise in commercial archaeology, project management, and supervising teams
- Knowledge of British archaeology and the heritage sector
- Strong teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level
- Ability to publish research and manage multi-period archaeological projects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fellowship (or willingness to work towards Fellowship) of the Higher Education Academy
- Experience in University-led and commercial archaeological contexts
- Strong leadership, managerial and pastoral skills
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage QUEST’s archaeological and environmental projects
- Supervise QUEST staff and ensure high-quality project delivery
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development
- Publish research outcomes and bring projects to academic/public dissemination
- Support the Department’s research culture and contribute to cross-disciplinary initiatives
- Engage with professional, academic, and heritage networks in the UK archaeology sector
