Field Archaeologist Position in Prehistoric & Roman Archaeology at University of Cambridge, UK – Apply by 31 October 2025

About Position/Job

The Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), part of the University of Cambridge’s Department of Archaeology, is seeking Field Archaeologist for multiple fixed-term positions (12 months) starting by September 2025. Successful candidates will contribute to major excavations, surveys, and evaluations across East Anglia, including prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements, and urban archaeology. The role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in large-scale excavations while working within a leading academic and professional environment. Field staff will be integral to delivering projects to high professional standards, engaging with colleagues, clients, and occasionally the public. These posts are well suited for early-career archaeologists looking to build expertise in commercial and academic fieldwork, with opportunities to develop specialisms in artefacts, environmental archaeology, illustration, or survey.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Archaeology (related subjects considered with strong excavation experience)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of British Archaeology
  • Fieldwork experience (training digs, placements, or excavations)
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and professional conduct

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in commercial field archaeology
  • UK/EU Driving Licence
  • Membership of CIfA
  • First Aid at Work or relevant H&S training
  • Skills in artefacts, environmental archaeology, illustration, or survey

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in field excavations, evaluations, and surveys
  • Work to archaeological briefs and client deadlines
  • Support colleagues and site directors in project delivery
  • Maintain compliance with CIfA standards and H&S legislation
  • Engage with colleagues and occasionally the public
