Fully Funded PhD in Archaeology and Cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean – Southern School of Advanced Studies, Italy

The Southern School of Advanced Studies (Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM)), Italy, invites applications for five fully funded PhD positions in Archaeology and Cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean for the 2026/2027 academic year. The four-year doctoral programme supports original research in archaeology, historical research, conservation, and cultural heritage through an interdisciplinary academic framework and funded doctoral scholarships.

The programme develops advanced research skills by combining archaeological investigation with historical, literary, and heritage studies. Doctoral researchers examine archaeological heritage through material culture, cultural connectivity, conservation, and heritage management while producing an original dissertation based on independent scientific research. Teaching activities also combine theoretical preparation with practical experience across research institutes, museums, archaeological parks, and archaeological superintendencies.

Furthermore, the programme explores the mobility of people, ideas, technologies, and objects alongside cultural interaction across ancient Mediterranean societies. It also examines the preservation, destruction, rediscovery, presentation, and communication of archaeological heritage while encouraging interdisciplinary interpretation of cultural, social, economic, and religious evidence.

Throughout the doctoral programme, candidates prepare an original research project aligned with the School’s research themes while developing expertise through structured academic training and practical research activities. The submitted research proposal demonstrates scientific knowledge and methodology but does not determine the final doctoral dissertation topic selected after admission.
