Fully Funded Master’s Scholarship in Zooarchaeology and Isotope Analysis at Universidade de Évora, Portugal – Apply by 16 April 2026

About the Scholarship

The Universidade de Évora invites applications for a fully funded Master’s scholarship in zooarchaeology and isotope analysis, offered as part of the HerdScape project: Herding Landscapes – From Roman to Medieval Pastoral Strategies. This programme allows scholars to investigate medieval animal husbandry practices through stable isotope analysis, including carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and strontium isotopes, alongside zooarchaeological methods applied to Iberian historical sites. Moreover, it promotes interdisciplinary research, data interpretation, and scientific dissemination, making it highly relevant for candidates interested in biochemistry, geochemistry, archaeology, and palaeodietary studies.

This scholarship in Portugal for 2026 is part of nationally funded research supported by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). Participants will collaborate with leading experts at HERCULES Laboratory, gain hands-on experience with EA-IRMS analysis, and contribute to innovative research on Roman and Medieval pastoral strategies. Therefore, scholars will acquire advanced laboratory skills, engage in cross-disciplinary projects, and generate data critical for understanding historical animal husbandry evolution.

Additionally, scholars benefit from structured training, mentorship, and active involvement in research outputs. They will develop strong analytical, laboratory, and professional skills while contributing to data synthesis, publication, and conference presentations. International exposure and career advancement opportunities are integral to the programme, ensuring participants leave with a competitive research profile.

The programme offers a 10-month full-time scholarship with comprehensive funding, including a monthly maintenance allowance of €1309.64. Thus, it is an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking fully funded research opportunities in archaeology, biochemistry, geochemistry, and interdisciplinary historical studies.
