About the Program
The University of Cologne invites applications for a fully funded PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology titled “Energy Futures: Social-Ecological Transformation and Future-Making in Rural Africa” at the Global South Studies Centre (GSSC). This doctoral research position focuses on examining the local socio-economic impacts of geothermal and other renewable energy infrastructures in rural Kenya, addressing broader processes of social-ecological transformation and future-making. The project forms part of the Collaborative Research Centre CRC-TRR 228 “Future Rural Africa”, a joint initiative between the University of Cologne and the University of Bonn. Supervised by Dr Clemens Greiner, the research combines long-term ethnographic fieldwork, qualitative methodologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The PhD is based in Cologne, Germany, with extended field research in East Africa, and is expected to commence in April 2026. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Social or Cultural Anthropology or a related field
- Strong training in qualitative and ethnographic research methods
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Willingness and ability to conduct extended fieldwork in tropical conditions
- Valid driving licence and unrestricted travel ability
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior ethnographic or field research experience
- Strong academic record
- Interest in interdisciplinary research environments
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
