About the PhD Position
CNRS invites applications for a fully funded PhD in Geography and Social Sciences focusing on fisheries and marine conservation at the Littoral, environnement, télédétection, géomatique (LETG) unit in Nantes, France. This doctoral research explores small-scale fisheries, biodiversity conservation, and governance systems in the South-Western Indian Ocean, particularly Mayotte.
Moreover, the candidate will contribute to the BRIDGES programme, collaborating with leading marine science institutions such as Ifremer and IRD. The project integrates institutional ethnography, participatory research, and ethno-geographical analysis. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, or related fields. In addition, strong research, communication, and teamwork skills are essential. Experience in fisheries, participatory approaches, or marine governance will be advantageous. Fluency in English is required, while basic French knowledge is beneficial.
This is a full-time, fully funded PhD position starting September 2026. It offers structured research training, international collaboration, and fieldwork opportunities in Mayotte and the wider SWIO region.
