About the PhD Position

The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a Fully Funded PhD position in Digital Archaeology, Virtual Reality (VR), and Interactive Storytelling within the Faculty of Humanities, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This exciting doctoral research focuses on immersive technologies such as VR, AR, and game-based environments to explore contested archaeological heritage and ethically sensitive pasts. Moreover, the project contributes to cutting-edge research in digital heritage, cultural memory, and interactive media studies.

The successful candidate will join the interdisciplinary Traumascapes project and collaborate with the 4D Research Lab, working alongside academic and societal partners. Furthermore, the role involves developing virtual environments, integrating spatial and archival datasets, and applying innovative storytelling approaches across multiple heritage case studies. As a result, researchers gain access to advanced facilities, collaborative workshops, and international research networks.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Archaeology, Heritage Studies, or Digital Humanities, with strong experience in 3D modelling, XR technologies, or game development. In addition, candidates must demonstrate a portfolio of relevant projects and possess excellent communication and teamwork skills. Therefore, an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and public engagement is highly desirable.

This is a full-time, Fully Funded PhD position for 4 years, starting in September 2026. It offers a competitive salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881 per month, along with tuition fee waivers, research training, and conference opportunities.
