About the Position

The Chair in Human Geography at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich invites applications for a Junior Researcher (PhD) in coastal resilience. This fully funded position is part of the prestigious Horizon Europe project “COAST-SCAPES”, led by Dr Liang Emlyn Yang, which brings together a network of 31 international partners. The research will focus on comparative modelling of coastal resilience strategies across selected regions in Europe and Asia, contributing to a global coastal resilience database. The role offers a stimulating interdisciplinary environment combining geography, spatial planning, data science, and policy analysis, with opportunities for fieldwork, expert interviews, and international travel. Based in Munich, the position is designed to support innovative, policy-relevant research in climate resilience and coastal systems, while contributing to Europe’s broader environmental goals.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in geography, spatial planning, earth sciences, data science, or a closely related field
  • Strong interest in human-environment interactions and resilience modelling
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Willingness to travel within Europe and to field sites in Asia

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative social science methods
  • Programming skills (Python, R, NetLogo, or MATLAB)
  • Familiarity with GIS, spatial modelling, and data visualisation
  • Skills in workshop facilitation and communication at the science-policy interface
  • Additional language skills in German, Chinese, or Southeast Asian languages are a plus
