About the PhD Position
CNRS invites applications for a fully funded PhD researcher position in medieval archaeology at the Archéologie et Archéométrie Department, located in Lyon, France. The Archaeology and Archaeometry Joint Research Unit (ArAr, CNRS, INSH, UMR 5138, University of Lyon 2, University of Lyon) brings together prehistorians and protohistorians, archaeologists specialising in the Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, geologists, sedimentologists and petrographers, physicists and chemists specialising in materials analysis and carbon-14 dating. The doctoral student will be assigned to the MOMau site at the ArAr archaeology and archaeometry laboratory – 7 rue Raulin 69007 Lyon.
This unique doctoral opportunity focuses on the diachronic study of construction practices in the Shirak region of Armenia, examining stone supply, building techniques, and resource management from the 7th century BC to the 7th century AD. The research contributes to international knowledge on ancient and medieval architecture, quarry archaeology, and the organisation of historical supply chains.
The successful candidate will engage in independent and collaborative research using excavation, prospecting, photogrammetry, and block surveying. Access to well-equipped laboratories, field sites, and advanced analytical facilities ensures a highly supportive environment for producing high-impact publications, gaining technical expertise, and fostering professional growth in archaeology and related disciplines.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in History, Anthropology, or Environmental Science and demonstrate familiarity with building archaeology, geology, and excavation techniques. Preferred skills include manual surveying, photogrammetry, block surveying, and proficiency in English. Strong teamwork, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration abilities are highly desirable for success in this research-intensive programme.
This is a full-time, fully funded PhD position for three years, starting 1 September 2026, offering a competitive stipend, research support, and access to professional development workshops.
