About the Program
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD position in modern history within the ERC Synergy-funded BLOCKADE project. Supervised by Samuël Kruizinga, this PhD focuses on interwar blockades and sanctions (1919–1939), examining how the League of Nations and other international actors used economic blockades as political tools. The project explores sanctions against Japan, Italy, and the Spanish Civil War, combining archival research, quantitative and qualitative methods, and interdisciplinary analysis. Based at the Amsterdam School for Historical Studies (ASH), the position offers an international, collaborative research environment, integration into a network of European universities, and opportunities for conference participation, BA-level teaching, and professional development. This research contributes to understanding the global impact of blockades and sanctions and aligns with ASH’s goal of advancing interdisciplinary historical scholarship.
