Fully Funded PhD in Mediterranean Holocene Palaeoenvironments | GIAP (ICAC) & ISEM, Spain/France

About the PhD Position

This is an open call for a four-year fully funded PhD position in Mediterranean Holocene Palaeoenvironments at the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC), Spain and the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences of Montpellier (ISEM), France.

The Landscape Archaeology Research Group at GIAP (ICAC-CERCA) invites applications for this exciting doctoral opportunity. The research focuses on reconstructing coastal landscapes in Thrace, Greece, using multi-proxy palaeoecological methods. The project integrates palaeoenvironmental data with archaeological and geoarchaeological evidence, contributing to internationally recognised studies in landscape archaeology and Mediterranean prehistory.

The successful candidate will join the MEDLANDS project, conducting both independent and collaborative research. The work will involve analysis of pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, and microcharcoal to investigate vegetation and landscape changes related to prehistoric and colonial settlements, particularly around the ancient Greek colony of Abdera. Candidates will participate in fieldwork in Greece, laboratory training in France and Spain, and receive interdisciplinary mentorship in palaeoenvironmental research and landscape archaeology.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in archaeology, palaeoecology, geology, or a related discipline. They should have demonstrable experience in palaeoenvironmental analysis, sediment coring, or laboratory techniques. Strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines are essential for success in this doctoral programme.

This is a full-time, fully funded Doctor of Philosophy position for four years, commencing between June and September 2026. The programme offers access to international conferences, collaborative research networks, and professional development workshops, fostering career growth in a globally recognised academic environment.
