About the PhD Position
Erasmus University Rotterdam invites applications for fully funded PhD Researcher positions in cultural heritage and tourism within the HERITOUR Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This exciting doctoral programme focuses on sustainable tourism, cultural heritage governance, overtourism challenges, and interdisciplinary policy innovation across Europe.
HERITOUR is a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network funded under Horizon Europe. It brings together leading universities and international partners to explore how cultural heritage and tourism sectors can collaborate more effectively. Importantly, the project addresses pressing global challenges such as overtourism, environmental sustainability, and inclusive governance through innovative and interdisciplinary research approaches.
In addition, successful candidates will join an international research consortium and collaborate closely with universities and heritage organisations. They will conduct qualitative research, policy analysis, and fieldwork on topics such as inclusivity, hybrid heritage experiences, resilience, and cross-sector governance. Consequently, the programme promotes both academic excellence and meaningful real-world impact.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in social sciences or humanities, including anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, or related disciplines. In addition, candidates must demonstrate strong analytical thinking, expertise in qualitative research methods, and excellent English communication skills, alongside the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and intercultural environments.
This is a full-time, fully funded PhD position for three years, starting in September 2026 under the Horizon Europe MSCA framework.
