Junior Research Fellow (JRF) Position in Cultural Landscape Research at NIAS, Bangalore, India

About Position

The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore, invites applications for two Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions under the Heritage Science and Society Programme in the School of Humanities. The fellows will work on the project “Cultural Landscape Research Using Geospatial Tools and Techniques”, funded by the SHRI Programme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Guided by the Principal Investigator, the role involves advanced research on cultural heritage sites, geospatial analysis, and field surveys. Fellows will contribute to the creation of a national heritage database and support training initiatives. This position provides a unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary heritage research, combining archaeology, history, geography, and geospatial technology, in line with NIAS’s mission to address societal challenges through innovative research.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Geography, Archaeology, History, Architecture, Cultural Heritage, Heritage Conservation, Remote Sensing, GIS, Computer Science, or IT
  • OR Bachelor’s/Master’s in Engineering/Technology in related fields
  • Must have cleared CSIR-UGC NET (including LS/Assistant Professorship), GATE, or equivalent national-level examination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in remote sensing and GIS
  • Fieldwork experience in archaeological or cultural sites
  • Strong analytical and teamwork skills

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on cultural heritage sites
  • Perform geospatial analysis and field surveys
  • Support development of a national heritage database
  • Collaborate with team members and Principal Investigator
  • Organise and conduct capacity-building workshops
