About Position/Job

Leiden University invites applications for a Lecturer position in Anthropology of Media and Visual Ethnography at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. This role is part of the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS), which focuses on global vulnerability, social resilience, and everyday practices of communities worldwide. The position offers a temporary contract of one year starting in December 2025 or January 2026. Reporting to Institute Manager Sarah Smith, the lecturer will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise theses, and engage in interdisciplinary research using visual, sonic, and digital ethnographic methods. This role aligns with CADS’s research themes of Diversity, Sustainability, and Digitalisation, providing opportunities for international collaboration and impactful, community-focused research.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology
  • Expertise in Visual and Multimodal Anthropology
  • Experience in film-making and hands-on ethnographic teaching
  • Knowledge of Anthropology of Media
  • Promising publication record (peer-reviewed articles, monographs, or films)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • International research experience
  • Experience with interdisciplinary and digital ethnographic methods
  • Ability to obtain Dutch University Teaching Qualification (BKO) if not already held

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including Expanded Ethnography, Mediated Anthropology, and Visual Ethnography
  • Supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses
  • Conduct research in Multimodal Anthropology and Visual and Sonic Ethnography
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary and international collaborations
