About Position/Job

The Netherlands Institute for the Near East in Leiden invites applications for the NINO Postdoctoral Fellowship Position in Egyptology including Coptology for a fully funded two-year opportunites beginning September 2026. This prestigious full-time postdoctoral position supports original research within Ancient Near Eastern studies, strengthening international scholarship in Egyptology and related disciplines.

The fellowship rotates annually between Egyptology, including Coptology, Assyriology, including Hittitology, and Near Eastern archaeology, with the 2026 call dedicated to Egyptology. The selected fellow will conduct independent research, organise an international academic workshop, publish peer-reviewed proceedings in a NINO volume, and teach the NINO-OIKOS MA Seminar on Methods and Concepts in Ancient Near Eastern Studies. The position contributes to interdisciplinary humanities research and aligns with NINO’s mission to advance textual, archaeological, and historical methodologies in the study of the ancient Near East.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completed a PhD in a relevant discipline between January 2022 and February 2026
  • Official confirmation of the PhD award before appointment
  • Research a profile appropriate to the career stage

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong publication record relative to career stage
  • Experience organising academic conferences or workshops
  • Postgraduate teaching experience
  • International research collaboration experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research within Egyptology, including Coptology
  • Organise the NINO Annual Postdoc Conference
  • Publish peer-reviewed conference proceedings
  • Teach the NINO-OIKOS MA Seminar
