About the Position
Queen’s University Belfast invites applications for a fully funded Palaeoecology Research Fellow position in palaeoecology and environmental science at the Institute for Heritage and Environmental Science, located in Belfast, UK. This interdisciplinary opportunity focuses on the Great Irish Famine (1845–52), exploring ecological, biological, and social contexts, while contributing to international research initiatives in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and landscape archaeology.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively within an internationally recognised research group, undertaking independent research using multi-proxy palaeoecological methods. Field sampling and laboratory analysis of peat and soil sequences, including pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, plant macrofossils, XRF, isotopic, and tephra analysis, will be central. Access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the 14CHRONO Centre, ensures a productive environment for high-impact publications, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Palaeoecology or a closely related discipline and demonstrate extensive experience in multi-proxy palaeoecology research. Preferred skills include Bayesian age–depth modelling, sedimentary aDNA analysis, biomarkers, and a demonstrated ability to acquire new palaeoenvironmental techniques, alongside proven teamwork, communication, and research collaboration skills.
This is a full-time, postdoctoral position for three years, starting in June 2026, offering a competitive salary of £41,519–£42,756 per annum.
