About the Program
The University of Vienna is offering a fully funded University Assistant Predoctoral (PhD) position in Ancient History and Papyrology, based at the renowned Institute of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy. Starting in October 2025, this four-year position offers early-career scholars the opportunity to conduct independent research focused on the ancient Mediterranean world, using primary sources such as inscriptions, papyri, ancient literature, and coins. Working under an interdisciplinary faculty within the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, the successful candidate will develop and complete a doctoral dissertation, contribute to undergraduate teaching, and engage in academic service. This post is ideally suited to researchers with a strong command of Ancient Greek, Latin, and papyrological methods, who are passionate about ancient documentary sources. The programme supports intellectual growth in an internationally collaborative and resource-rich academic environment in Vienna, Austria.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Completed Master’s degree in Ancient History, Papyrology, or a related field
- Strong skills in documentary papyrology
- Excellent command of Latin and Ancient Greek
- Strong written and spoken English
- Willingness to acquire German (if not already fluent) to C1 level during employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in historical research using documentary sources
- Knowledge of additional modern languages relevant to Classical Studies
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
