About the Program
The University of Cologne, one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in East Central European History within the Emmy Noether Group “Managing Development.” The project explores management knowledge in economic development projects during the Cold War, focusing on East Central Europe (preferably Poland). Supervised by Dr. Katharina Kreuder-Sonnen, the doctoral researcher will conduct a case study in East Central Europe and work closely with colleagues examining Sub-Saharan Africa. The position offers excellent research conditions, international collaboration, archival research opportunities, and the chance to contribute to global histories of management, development, and planning.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- MA degree in History, Eastern European Studies, Polish Studies, Social/Cultural Anthropology, Postcolonial Studies, or related field
- Training in historical research methods and cultural theory
- Strong command of Polish (or another East Central European language)
- Excellent command of English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in the history of knowledge, management, planning, state socialism, and economic thought
- Experience in archival research
- Good organisational and communication skills
- Willingness to conduct research abroad
- Basic German skills (or willingness to learn)
