About the Program

The University of Iceland is offering a fully funded PhD position in Geography or Tourism Studies within the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, part of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences. This exciting opportunity is funded through the EU Horizon Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) as part of the VIMAS (Visitor Monitoring and Management in Protected and Recreational Areas) doctoral network. The selected PhD researcher will explore the sustainable management of recreational areas and nature-based tourism, focusing on visitor monitoring, social inclusion, and environmental justice. Under the supervision of Professor Rannveig Ólafsdóttir, the candidate will conduct fieldwork, collaborate internationally, and contribute to addressing the challenges of tourism growth, equality, and land use in Nordic regions.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Geography, Tourism Studies, or related disciplines
Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English

Preferred Qualifications:

Research experience in tourism or environmental studies
Strong academic record
Skills in statistics, ArcGIS, PPGIS, or system dynamics
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
