Fully Funded PhD in Historical DNA and Wildlife Genomics at the University of East Anglia – Apply by 7 January 2026

About the Program

The University of East Anglia (UEA) invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship in Historical Genomics of the Declining Red Squirrel in Britain. Supervised by Dr Anders Bergström at the School of Biological Sciences, this project will explore how centuries of ecological change, invasive species, and human intervention have shaped the genetic history of Britain’s red squirrels. Using historical DNA and whole-genome sequencing, the research will uncover how population decline, genetic rescue, and environmental pressures have influenced the species’ evolution. This project contributes to UEA’s leading research in biodiversity, conservation, and evolutionary genomics, offering a rare opportunity to combine molecular biology, bioinformatics, and conservation genetics.
