About the Program

The University of Graz is offering a fully funded PhD position in Linguistics as part of the prestigious FWF START project, “The emotions we speak: predicting language change from speakers’ emotional attitudes to grammatical structures using formal linguistic tools.” This position is ideal for early career researchers interested in combining psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and formal grammar with innovative empirical approaches. The role involves writing a doctoral dissertation that directly contributes to the goals of the project, with a strong focus on Slavic languages, especially Ukrainian. The position is supervised by Dr. Svitlana Antonyuk and Prof. Gianina Iordachioaia, and offers an excellent opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary team at a leading research institution in Graz, Austria. The position runs for four years, providing a supportive academic environment and robust training in empirical, corpus-based, and theoretical methods.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, historical or theoretical linguistics
  • CEFR C1-level proficiency in German or English
  • Excellent knowledge of Ukrainian

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of another Slavic language (esp. Polish)
  • Experience with empirical data collection and/or corpus-based research
  • Background in formal and/or quantitative grammar
  • IT skills and familiarity with databases
  • Strong organisational and collaborative abilities
  • Self-motivated with independent working style
