About Position/Job

The Faculty of Science at Leiden University, in collaboration with the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), is offering a PhD opportunity in Computational Imaging for Cultural Heritage. This research will focus on the development of new X-ray imaging techniques for the study of thin, elongated objects like paintings, as part of the FLEXART project. The project involves collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), University of Antwerp, and Cambridge University. The role provides an opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research combining machine learning, computational imaging, and cultural heritage studies.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • MSc in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong background in computational imaging and machine learning
  • Excellent programming skills (C++ and/or Python)
  • Experience in image processing techniques
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with X-ray imaging and physics of image formation
  • Motivated to work on real-world cultural heritage problems
  • Creative, independent, and communicative team player
