About Position/Job

The University of Padova (Università degli Studi di Padova) invites applications for PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in Deep Earthquake Research within the ERC Consolidator Grant SODA (Horizon 2020), hosted by the Department of Geosciences. This full-time, temporary opportunity focuses on understanding deep earthquakes using state-of-the-art seismological approaches and thermomechanical modelling, at the interface of geophysics, computational science, and earthquake physics. Led by Dr Piero Poli, the project offers flexible start dates, with possibilities to begin as early as 1 September 2026. Candidates will work in a vibrant, international research environment with access to advanced computational facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration across seismology, geodynamics, geology, and environmental sciences. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD (or near completion) for postdoctoral positions; relevant Master’s background for PhD applicants
  • Research experience in geosciences, seismology, geophysics, or related disciplines
  • Excellent command of English
  • 1–4 years of research experience for postdoctoral applicants

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in thermomechanical numerical or analytical modelling
  • Experience in large-scale seismic data processing and analysis
  • Skills in machine learning, advanced computational methods, GPU acceleration, or tensor-based techniques
  • Strong publication potential and collaborative research skills

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on deep earthquake processes
  • Develop and apply seismological and thermomechanical models
  • Analyse large seismic datasets using advanced computational approaches
  • Publish results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals
