About Position/Job

The Cluster of Excellence “Cross-Cultural Philology: New Perspectives on Premodern Textualities” at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is offering PhD & Postdoc Fellows in Cultural Studies at LMU Munich. This program includes 12 PhD and 17 Postdoctoral Research Fellowships starting on 1 January 2026. These fully funded positions, available until 31 May 2029, invite outstanding candidates to investigate philological practices and cultural dynamics across five millennia and diverse regions, including the Near and Middle East, East Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Indian subcontinent. Research will focus on one of five thematic areas: writing systems, text preservation, editing practices, canon and censorship, or migration and translation of texts. Fellows will benefit from interdisciplinary, international collaboration, combining philology with digital humanities. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge research network at one of Europe’s leading universities.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • For PhD: Excellent master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • For Postdoc: Completed doctorate in a relevant discipline
  • Strong academic record and research potential
  • Fluency in German and/or English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in philology, textual studies, or digital humanities
  • Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research interests
  • Ability to work collaboratively in international teams

Key Responsibilities
