About the Program
University of Cologne invites applications for a fully-funded PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology titled “Future Rural Africa: Future-making and social-ecological transformation” at the Global South Studies Centre (GSSC). This doctoral position focuses on conducting long-term ethnographic research on local socio-economic impacts of renewable energy infrastructure in rural Kenya, addressing how geothermal and other renewable energy projects influence communities. The project will be supervised by Dr Clemens Greiner and aligns with the research theme Project Energy Futures within CRC-TRR 228. The research duration is from April 2026 to December 2029, based in Cologne, Germany, with fieldwork in Kenya. The position offers interdisciplinary collaboration, advanced research training, international networking, and professional academic development.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Social/Cultural Anthropology or related field
- Excellent knowledge of qualitative ethnographic research methods
- Unrestricted ability to travel and conduct fieldwork in tropical climates
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior field research experience in Africa
- Strong academic record with publications or conference presentations
- Flexibility, team orientation, and interest in interdisciplinary work
