About the Program

The University of Birmingham is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD project in Volcanology, titled “Finding the Most Explosive Volcanoes on Earth.” This exciting opportunity focuses on investigating the world’s highest-risk volcanic systems. Supervised by Dr Michael Cassidy, the project integrates global datasets, statistical analysis, and machine learning with targeted fieldwork in Southeast Asia to identify volcanoes most likely to produce large-magnitude eruptions.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Earth Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, Environmental Science, or a related discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in volcanology, quantitative analysis, GIS, or geospatial datasets
  • Strong academic record
  • Willingness to undertake fieldwork in challenging environments
  • Familiarity with machine learning methods (training will be provided)
