About Position/Job

The School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University invites applications for two full-time postdoctoral fellowships in Classical Archaeology within the research project Locally Crafted Empires (LoCiS). These fellowships offer a unique opportunity to explore local portrait cultures and intersecting identities in Western Asia from 1st century BCE to 5th century CE. Led by Professor Rubina Raja, this project sheds light on the cultural entanglements and personal experiences of individuals under imperial rule through extensive archaeological and historical research. Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Classical Archaeology or closely related disciplines
  • Strong expertise in ancient visual culture
  • Proficiency in English (academic level)
  • Ability to read German, French, and Italian

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in Greece, eastern Roman provinces, and/or Near Eastern archaeology
  • Documented publications relevant to the project
  • Excellent organisational, analytical, and time-management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative abilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on locally produced portraits from Western Asia (100 BCE – 500 CE)
  • Develop and manage project databases and catalogues
  • Produce a monograph and co-/single-authored articles
  • Organise conferences, workshops, and guest lectures
  • Participate in research travel and fieldwork
  • Collaborate closely with Professor Rubina Raja and the project team
