About the Position
The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Vienna, is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Tibetan Buddhist Studies, with a focus on the scholastic traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Starting from 1 November 2025, this full-time, EU-funded position is part of the renowned TibSchol Project, which explores intellectual exchanges, networks, and textual traditions in the formative periods of Tibetan scholasticism. The successful applicant will conduct original-language research in Classical Tibetan, contribute to digital humanities projects, and engage with a dynamic, international team of scholars. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Tibetan Studies, Buddhist Studies, or a closely related field
- Proficiency in Classical Tibetan (original source reading)
- Proven experience in scholarly research using Tibetan texts
- Familiarity with early Tibetan religious, historical, and intellectual contexts
- Excellent written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Sanskrit
- Experience with cursive Tibetan script
- Skills in digital humanities (TEI/XML, databases)
- Collaborative and independent research capability
- Academic publication experience
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research on Tibetan Buddhist scholastic traditions
- Focus initially on the formative phase of scholasticism (until 30 June 2026)
- Contribute to the TibSchol prosopographical database and digital library
- Present research at academic events and publish in peer-reviewed venues
- Co-organise workshops and scholarly activities at the IKGA
