About the Position

Lund University invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position in Digital Archaeology & Ancient Religious Studies at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CTR), part of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, located in Lund, Sweden. This exciting academic opportunity focuses on the sensory, experiential, and cognitive aspects of ancient religious buildings, particularly synagogues, churches, and temples, in the Late Antique Mediterranean (c. 100–800 CE).

The successful candidate will collaborate with the HumLab and DARKLab research centres, undertaking independent research using advanced 3D digital modelling, virtual reality, motion capture, eye-tracking, and experimental archaeology methods. Access to state-of-the-art heritage preservation facilities, cultural heritage projects, and digital humanities labs ensures a productive environment for high-impact publications, international conferences, interdisciplinary workshops, and professional development.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Religious Studies, Archaeology, or Cultural Heritage and demonstrate strong experience in archaeological fieldwork, digital archaeology, GIS analysis, and sensory or experiential studies. Preferred skills include 3D reconstruction, VR simulation, immersive visualisation, experimental archaeology, interdisciplinary collaboration, scholarly communication, and teamwork skills.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Religious Studies or Archaeology
  • Experience in archaeological fieldwork and site documentation
