About Position/Job
Brown University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Egyptology and Assyriology within the Department of Egyptology and Assyriology, based in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. This two-year, full-time postdoctoral appointment will run from August 2026 to July 2028 and is designed for early-career scholars working in Egyptology, Assyriology, or the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity.
The role offers an outstanding opportunity to pursue independent, publishable research while contributing to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Postdoctoral Research Associates teach one course per semester and are encouraged to develop innovative and inclusive courses that enhance the department’s curriculum. In addition, the postholder will actively engage in the department’s academic life through colloquia, workshops, and mentoring, aligning with Brown University’s commitment to scholarly excellence, diversity, and interdisciplinary collaboration in ancient studies.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Egyptology, Assyriology, History of Science in Antiquity, or a closely related field
- Doctorate awarded within the last five years from an institution other than Brown University
- PhD must be completed by 31 July 2026
- Strong research agenda with clear publication plans
- Ability to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing inclusive and innovative curricula
- Evidence of active engagement in academic communities
- Research interests that complement or extend departmental strengths
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent postdoctoral research leading to publications
- Teach one course per semester, typically one undergraduate and one graduate seminar
- Develop new courses that enhance curricular diversity
- Participate in departmental colloquia, workshops, and academic events
- Engage with students and faculty as part of the department’s scholarly community
