About Position/Job

Radboud University is offering a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher position in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) for Cultural Heritage within the Faculty of Science. This role is part of the national HAICu (Human AI for Cultural Heritage) project, a Netherlands-wide initiative connecting AI research with digital humanities, cultural heritage institutions, journalists, and society. The postdoc will focus on developing responsible and explainable AI technologies tailored to large-scale multimodal cultural heritage collections, particularly those of the National Library of the Netherlands. You will conduct independent research, supervise a PhD candidate working on XAI and metadata creation, and organise benchmarks for AI technologies applied to historical and contemporary newspapers. The project emphasises societal impact, transparency, and real-world applicability of AI, aligning strongly with Radboud University’s mission to address major societal challenges through interdisciplinary research.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Science, Language and Speech Technology, or a related field
  • Strong experience with AI and Explainable AI methods
  • Proven ability to conduct independent academic research
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with cultural heritage collections (books, newspapers, films, archives)
  • Experience supervising PhD candidates
  • Background in organising academic or professional benchmarks
  • Strong programming and software engineering skills
  • Ability to work creatively in interdisciplinary teams
