About Position/Job
University of Oslo (UiO) invites applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellow position in Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History, linked to the interdisciplinary research project “Clim-SHOCK: Unsustainable? Past Impacts and Future Challenges of Volcanic Climate Shocks”. This position is part of the UiO: Energy and Environment Convergence Environment and is designed to prepare early-career researchers for leading academic roles.
The postdoctoral fellow will be based in Oslo, Norway, primarily within the Department of Archaeology, and will contribute mainly to Work Package 2, focusing on past volcanic climate shocks (500s–600s and 900s–1200s). Led by Associate Professor Kjetil Loftsgarden, the project integrates archaeology, history, climate science, and geoscience to understand societal resilience and vulnerability. The role combines advanced research with museum work, cultural heritage management, and dissemination, offering a distinctive interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research environment.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Archaeology or a closely related field (or thesis submitted)
- Strong academic background with high-quality publications
- Experience working with large datasets, databases, and spatial analysis tools
- Fluent written and spoken English
- Ability to read and understand Norwegian
- Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience in the Nordic Iron Age
- Familiarity with natural science methods or interdisciplinary research
- Experience with museum dissemination and public engagement
- Strong presentation and communication skills
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological research on past volcanic climate shocks
- Contribute mainly to Work Package 2, while supporting other project WPs
- Analyse archaeological sites, finds, excavation reports, radiocarbon data, and pollen data
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration across sciences and humanities
- Engage in museum work, cultural heritage management, and collections management
- Contribute to dissemination, exhibitions, and policy-relevant outreach
